Harkness State Park | Waterford CT

I just want to share with you one of my favorite locations! When people reach out asking for beach pictures I will often recommend this location. If I am going to be honest beach pictures can be a little boring. There is no scenery or background. Nothing to sit on or frame a shot. So I find it hard to fill an entire session with just beach pictures.

Enter Harkness State Park! This location, which is almost 2 hours away from Wilbraham, is right on the Connecticut coast. Being a state park means that everyone is welcome, with a small parking fee- and you will see lots of photographers. The beauty of Harkness State Park is the diversity of options. There is a big mansion, which hosts many weddings, consequently the architecture is wonderful- stone, gates, pillars! Three different gorgeous gardens. A huge lawn that overlooks the ocean and heads right to a beach! I usually try to pick one weekend in August and books as many sessions there as I can. It is a drive, but any of my previous clients will tell you it is well worth the drive!

Let’s start with the architecture- all of these pictures are at the same gate. The late day sunlight hits it so perfectly.

The buildings are surrounded by these amazing pillars and stairs and walls and I just love all of it!!

The gardens are not to be missed. With at least 3 different gardens to wander around and explore. They are the perfect backdrop.

And of course you can’t forget the beach! I love the rocky area- it is usually less crowded- and fabulous ocean views!

Now don’t think it is only good for senior portraits- it is a lovely backdrop for family sessions too.

Are you intrigued? Want to know more about this location and how it works? Maybe you want to know when I am planning my weekend at this location. Reach out and I will give you all the deets!
